CHOOSING THE RIGHT BONSAI POT

When selecting bonsai pots, there are a few important factors to consider. The first thing to consider is the tree’s balance. Make sure the pot is two to three times as wide as the tree’s crown and allows a half-inch of space between the root ball and the base of the pot. A rectangular or oval pot should be about one-third the width of the tree, while pots with smaller diameters are fine.

The second thing to consider is the style of the tree. Deciduous trees tend to have colorful bark and foliage. Choose a pot with a pattern that mimics the color of the tree’s bark. You can also choose a pot that has a texture that resembles the bark. This helps bring out the unique characteristics of the tree. If you’re not sure what type of pot to choose, take some time to research your options.

Finally, you should know what type of material the pot is made of. Although many materials are suitable for bonsai, you should avoid those made of metal. Metals are known to release toxins when used as bonsai pots. Traditional, well-made Bonsai pots are made of ceramic, porcelain, or stoneware that has been burned. These materials absorb virtually no water, which is beneficial to the health of your trees.

If you choose to buy a ceramic pot for your bonsai, you should invest in a sturdy one. A round ceramic pot will keep the soil moist and ensure healthy growth. An oversized ceramic pot is also an excellent choice for bonsai that are not grown in a terracotta pot. You can also get one of the large-sized ceramic pots and an oblong-shaped ceramic pot.
